Independent Custody Visitors make unannounced visits to detainees held in Police Custody to check on their health and welfare, ensure that Sussex Police is treating them inline with Codes of Practice, and to help the public feel reassured that there is independent oversight of detainees' welfare.
Volunteers ask detainees a series of questions about how they are being treated, check on any areas they have access to and complete a handwritten report which is sent to the Scheme Manager for further actions.
Volunteers receive an Induction training which includes a tour of Custody.
We currently have vacancies at Crawley, Worthing and Eastbourne Custody suites.
