School Governors

Schools across Hampshire need committed volunteers to be school governors.

Governors attend meetings, ask challenging questions, and visit the school.

The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out the duties amongst its members, and be able to take decisions as a group.

This board level position gives a fantastic real world experience of director roles and increase leadership skills, all whilst helping the local community.

Governing bodies have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and direction.
  2. Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.

Governors may also be involved with:

  • Visits in to school.
  • Special projects.
  • Staff recruitment.

The skills needed to become a governor include:

  • Commitment in our children's future and improving educational outcomes.
  • Inquisitiveness to analyse and question.
  • The ability to make judgements and take decisions.
  • Inter-personal skills and the ability to work as a team.

Although not essential, governing bodies may look for experience of areas such as education, finance, personnel, business, etc.

Being a school governor can be a very rewarding role. Here are some benefits that others have found:

  • The knowledge that you are helping schools, pupils and the local community.
  • Experience in a Non-Executive director position and leadership skills.
  • Training and support in order to help you fulfil your duties and responsibilities.

Please note you do not need to be a parent to become a school governor.

Vacancies are subject to requirement, we will work with you to match you to a suitable governor vacancy in your local area.
