Probably the most important service we offer - our volunteer befrienders visit a lonely elderly person for an hour or two each week - maybe just for a cuppa and a chat.
What's in it for you:
Apart from being good for your mind and body, this role helps you connect with others; it strengthens your ties to your community; it's a great way to meet people and can develop your social skills.
More than that, you will become a happier person just by helping someone else! Often, this is the only face to face human contact that a 'visitee' has from one week to the next. This is hugely welcomed and fantastically rewarding - for both the service user and the befriender.
This role DOES enhance the lives of our service users and it WILL enrich yours...
Why we want you:
Older people should be valued as a tremendous asset to society. However, loneliness can cause serious damage, physically and mentally; as dangerous as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day and more dangerous than obesity.
A survey by the campaign to end loneliness found that 42% of older people reported that if they need help, they do not know where to turn. You can turn these figures on their head.
We want to maintain our excellent service but also look at ways we can improve it - and your input would be invaluable. Our elderly population is growing year on year and in order to meet the increase in demand we are experiencing, we need more kind, generous spirited volunteers...
We need you.
