Archives Alive Volunteers

Would you like to play an important role in preserving and promoting Brighton and Hove’s unique heritage? QueenSpark Books, the UK\'s longest-running community publisher, has been documenting the lives of local people since 1972. We are seeking volunteers for our Heritage Lottery Funded project Archives Alive. The majority of QueenSpark books are now out of print and much of our archive and associated material remains largely unseen, and underutilised. Archives Alive will ensure this important ‘people’s history’ of the city - the only one of its kind - will be revitalised and made accessible to the public. There are a number of volunteer roles that you can be part of, as volunteers will collectively choose 4 new books to be published, create a new, mobile-optimised website and identify, catalogue and preserve important historical texts, photographs and audio recordings. What can you expect as a volunteer? You will learn about the heritage and be guided/trained, as appropriate, by professionals in archiving, book editing/publishing and using digital media. You can gain specific skills in:

• Archive research

• Cataloguing and conserving historic material

• Photographic research

• Identification and display of historic material

• Selecting and editing text prior to publishing

• Geo-referencing and location-specific media

To register for any of the above, please e-mail ali@queensparkbooks.org.uk, outlining any interest or experience you have in that field (please note, no experience is necessary, as training / guidance will be given), and any skills that you have that you think might be appropriate for the role.
